The Osmium Isotope Signature of Phanerozoic Large Igneous Provinces

نویسندگان

چکیده

The emplacement of Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) throughout the Phanerozoic Eon introduced vast quantities mafic rocks to Earth's surface, which were subsequently weathered into oceans. Osmium isotope data can be used track these LIP-related weathering fluxes, providing a global fingerprint timing and magnitude LIP emplacement, guiding assessments impact events on ocean biogeochemistry regulation climate system. Sedimentary Os records spanning late are reviewed herein new observations from Eocene hyperthermal event ETM-2 presented. While stratigraphy provide major constraints activity in geological record, it cannot always distinguish whether extrusive was subaerial or submarine. utility osmium isotopes as tracer past volcanism may enhanced when alongside proxies such mercury concentrations, more diagnostic style individual episodes emplacement. Hitherto, only few high-resolution Os-isotope across LIPs have effectively exploited short oceanic residence time Os. Future studies suitable, well-preserved stratigraphic will significantly improve our understanding nature, progression, consequences

Impact induced melting and the development of large igneous provinces

We use hydrodynamic modelling combined with known data on mantle melting behaviour to examine the potential for decompression melting of lithosphere beneath a large terrestrial impact crater. This mechanism may generate sufficient quantity of melt to auto-obliterate the crater. Melting would initiate almost instantaneously, but the effects of such massive mantle melting may trigger long-lived m...

Physical volcanology of continental large igneous provinces: update and review

Large igneous provinces (LIPs) form in both oceanic and continental settings by the emplacement and eruption of voluminous magmas ranging from basalt to rhyolite in composition. Continental flood basalt provinces are the best studied LIPs and consist of crustal intrusive systems, extensive flood lavas and ignimbrites, and mafic volcaniclastic deposits in varying proportions. Intrusive rocks are...

Large Igneous Provinces: Crustal Structure, Dimensions, and External Consequences

Large igneous provinces (LIPs) are a continuum of voluminous iron and magnesium rich rock emplacements which include continental flood basalts and associated intrusive rocks, volcanic passive margins, oceanic plateaus, submarine ridges, seamount groups, and ocean basin flood basalts. Such provinces do not originate at "normal" seafloor spreading centers. We compile all known in situ LIPs younge...

Climate changes caused by degassing of sediments during the emplacement of large igneous provinces

11 Most mass extinctions during the last 500 m.y. coincide with eruptions of large igneous 12 provinces (LIP): the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction was synchronous with the Deccan 13 flood volcanism, Permian-Triassic extinction with the eruption of the enormous 14 Siberian Traps, and End-Guadalupian extinction with the Emeishan volcanic province. 15 The causal link remains disputed, however, and ...

Osmium isotope evidence for a large Late Triassic impact event

Anomalously high platinum group element concentrations have previously been reported for Upper Triassic deep-sea sediments, which are interpreted to be derived from an extraterrestrial impact event. Here we report the osmium (Os) isotope fingerprint of an extraterrestrial impact from Upper Triassic chert successions in Japan. Os isotope data exhibit a marked negative excursion from an initial O...
